Our Purpose at NATIONAL UMC

The UMW unit of National United Methodist Church is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. We achieve our purpose by working for justice through service and advocacy. Our members are concerned about issues affecting the well-being of women and children. We invite experts to speak to our group about education, immigration, homelessness, human trafficking, and other issues. Our unit supports missionaries around the world and works to educate local members on the needs of the global community. We are engaged in helping our local community through our annual Great Day of Service when we collect food, make health kits, and work on other activities to help those in need. Nurturing one’s faith is one of the focuses of the United Methodist Women, and National UMC’s UMW provides opportunities to grow closer to God and develop spiritually during each person’s faith journey.

Who we are

We are a community of approximately 150 women of all ages, races, and interests. Members participate as at-large members or as part of small groups, which we call Circles. Our circles meet for fellowship, mutual support, study, devotion, and mission work. Circles are self-selected based on interests, spiritual desires, and stages of life. We encourage you to come and visit any of our circles that interest you. All women are welcome.

CIRCLE ONE – BRIDGE BUILDERS

A diverse, intergenerational group of women over twenty strong, Circle One focuses on building bridges both to the world around us and within our communities. Meets in the Wesley library on the first Sunday of the month at 1 pm.

CIRCLE TWO – PRIMETIME WOMEN

Mostly women in their fifties, sixties and seventies, Circle Two enjoys a variety of activities including lunches out. They include mothers of adult children and grandchildren and newly retired women. Circle Two is a daytime circle and meets on the second Wednesday of the month.

CIRCLE SIX – THE ECLECTICS

An eclectic group of women aged 40 to 80 that includes members who are married, single, divorced, widowed; mothers and those without children; working women and retirees. This group encompasses a wide range of interests including reading, crafts, Bible study, and community service. Circle Six meets on Sunday afternoons at noon (after the second service), usually every other month.

CIRCLE SEVEN – YOUNG PROFESSIONALS AND MOMS WITH YOUNG KIDS

This newly formed group of young women includes a mix of single, married, professionals, and moms with young kids.  The circle explores issues related to their personal faith journeys, parenting, work-life balance, Bible study and social outreach.  Meetings are generally on the third Sunday morning of the month during the study hour at Metropolitan.

CIRCLE EIGHT – CARING, SHARING, SERVING INTERGENERATIONALS

An intergenerational group that includes working women and retirees. The circle meets monthly and occasionally with other circles for luncheons. In the monthly meetings, they discuss topics relevant to the Methodist Church, volunteering, donating, planning, and participating in events for the congregation and congregational care. They meet in person and on Zoom on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM at the church.

CIRCLE NINE – RETIREES

This group of retired women gets together for fellowship, educational programs, refreshments, and an occasional luncheon. The circle usually meets by Zoom on the first Wednesday of every month at 10:30 AM, with in-person luncheons two to three times a year.

CIRCLE TEN - SHARING, SERVICE, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Our circle meets in the evenings on alternating 3rd Sundays or Mondays of the month at the Metropolitan Memorial campus. Our small group’s focus is on sharing questions of faith and supporting one another throughout the changing stages of life: from raising teenagers through caring for aging parents, and beyond. Circle gatherings often center around service and social justice issues that touch our families and communities, though we enjoy purely social activities as well.

Great Day of Service

May 4, 2024, 12 - 3 pm in the Metropolitan Memorial Campus.

The UMW will hold its annual Great Day of Service on Saturday, May 4, from 12:00 to 3:00 PM in the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Campus. At noon we will have a light fundraising luncheon with the proceeds going to KenAid Children’s Fund, which supports the Blueview-Bamburi and Blueview-Ugatuzi Schools in Kenya. During the luncheon, Lois Weaver will give a presentation on the KenAid Children’s Fund. Then from 1 to 3 pm, we will engage in projects to help those in need in our community and beyond. Projects will support groups such as The TraRon Center, Wendt Center Grief Camp, Project Transformation, Educare, Ballet Elite, KenAid, and Impact Fellowship. This is a church-wide event and we hope to see members of our congregation of all ages come together for this time of fellowship and action.
